Self-ligating braces are similar to traditional braces in terms of placement, but they differ in the way they are secured. Instead of using elastic, rubber bands, or metal ties, self-ligating braces utilize specialized clips or brackets to guide the archwire and shift your teeth into the desired position. These clips provide increased flexibility for tooth movement, which can potentially lessen the discomfort sometimes experienced with conventional ligatures. The brackets or clips can be easily adjusted, resulting in shorter and more comfortable routine appointments with your orthodontist.
When compared to traditional braces, self-ligating braces may require fewer visits to your orthodontist and cause less discomfort during adjustments. The absence of elastic, rubber, or metal ties makes self-ligating braces easier to maintain and keep clean. However, it is still important to dedicate time to brushing and flossing as you would with regular braces, as this remains a crucial and advantageous aspect of your daily oral hygiene routine.
